A national need is to prepare for and respond to accidental or intentional disasters categorized as chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive (CBRNE). These incidents require specific subject-matter expertise, yet have commonalities. We identify 7 core elements comprising CBRNE science that require integration for effective preparedness planning and public health and medical response and recovery. These core elements are (1) basic and clinical sciences, (2) modeling and systems management, (3) planning, (4) response and incident management, (5) recovery and resilience, (6) lessons learned, and (7) continuous improvement. A key feature is the ability of relevant subject matter experts to integrate information into response operations. We propose the CBRNE medical operations science support expert as a professional who (1) understands that CBRNE incidents require an integrated systems approach, (2) understands the key functions and contributions of CBRNE science practitioners, (3) helps direct strategic and tactical CBRNE planning and responses through first-hand experience, and (4) provides advice to senior decision-makers managing response activities. Recognition of both CBRNE science as a distinct competency and the establishment of the CBRNE medical operations science support expert informs the public of the enormous progress made, broadcasts opportunities for new talent, and enhances the sophistication and analytic expertise of senior managers planning for and responding to CBRNE incidents.

The public health burden of alcohol is unevenly distributed across the life course, with levels of use, abuse, and dependence increasing across adolescence and peaking in early adulthood. Here, we leverage this temporal patterning to search for common genetic variants predicting developmental trajectories of alcohol consumption. Comparable psychiatric evaluations measuring alcohol consumption were collected in three longitudinal community samples (N = 2,126, obs = 12,166). Consumption-repeated measurements spanning adolescence and early adulthood were analyzed using linear mixed models, estimating individual consumption trajectories, which were then tested for association with Illumina 660W-Quad genotype data (866,099 SNPs after imputation and QC). Association results were combined across samples using standard meta-analysis methods. Four meta-analysis associations satisfied our pre-determined genome-wide significance criterion (FDR < 0.1) and six others met our ‘suggestive’ criterion (FDR <0.2). Genome-wide significant associations were highly biological plausible, including associations within GABA transporter 1, SLC6A1 (solute carrier family 6, member 1), and exonic hits in LOC100129340 (mitofusin-1-like). Pathway analyses elaborated single marker results, indicating significant enriched associations to intuitive biological mechanisms, including neurotransmission, xenobiotic pharmacodynamics, and nuclear hormone receptors (NHR). These findings underscore the value of combining longitudinal behavioral data and genome-wide genotype information in order to study developmental patterns and improve statistical power in genomic studies.

While there is increasing recognition among archaeologists of the extent to which non-agricultural societies have managed their terrestrial ecosystems, the traditional management of marine ecosystems has largely been ignored. In this paper, we bring together Indigenous ecological knowledge, coastal geomorphological observations, and archaeological data to document how Northwest Coast First Nations cultivated clams to maintain and increase productivity. We focus on “clam gardens,” walled intertidal terraces constructed to increase bivalve habitat and productivity. Our survey and excavations of clam gardens in four locations in British Columbia provide insights into the ecological and social context, morphology, construction, and first reported ages of these features. These data demonstrate the extent of traditional maricultural systems among coastal First Nations and, coupled with previously collected information on terrestrial management, challenge us to broaden our definition of “forager” as applied to Northwest Coast peoples. This study also highlights the value of combining diverse kinds of knowledge, including archaeological data, to understand the social and ecological contexts of traditional management systems.

Summary
“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.”
Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking-Glass (1871)Why study inequalities? Richard Bellman [Bellman, 1978] answered:
There are three reasons for the study of inequalities: practical, theoretical, and aesthetic.
In many practical investigations, it is necessary to bound one quantity by another. The classical inequalities are very useful for this purpose.
From the theoretical point of view, very simple questions give rise to entire theories. For example, we may ask when the nonnegativity of one quantity implies that of another. This simple question leads to the theory of positive operators and the theory of differential inequalities. The theory of quasilinearization is a blend of the theory of dynamic programming and that of positive operators. This is typical of mathematics. Each new theory uses parts of existing theories.
Another question which gives rise to much interesting research is that of finding equalities associated with inequalities. We use the principle that every inequality should come from an equality which makes the inequality obvious.
Along these lines, we may also look for representations which make inequalities obvious. Often, these representations are maxima or minima of certain quantities.
Again, we know that many inequalities are associated with geometric properties. Hence, we can go in either direction. We can find the geometric equivalent of an analytic result, or the analytic consequence of a geometric fact such as convexity or duality.

Uniform flow in curved, wide, erodible-bed channels is formulated on the basis of the conservation of flux of moment-of-momentum, to obtain relations for the vertical distributions of radial-plane velocity and radial shear stress. The expression for the radial stress exerted on the bed is utilized in a force-equilibrium analysis of the moving bed layer to obtain relations for the average transverse slope of the bed and for the radial bed profile. The reduction of primary bed shear stress due to the net radial transport of streamwise momentum toward the outer (concave) bank is then calculated, by introducing the derived expressions for the velocity components into the momentum equation for the primary-flow direction. It is found that the stress reductions in deep, narrow channels can exceed 50%. Bed profiles and velocity distributions measured in natural and laboratory streams are found to be in good conformity with those calculated from this moment-based theory.

A small-perturbation stability analysis is developed for investigation of the role of the secondary current accompanying channel curvature in the initiation and early development of meanders of alluvial and ice- or rock-incised streams. A small sinusoidal perturbation in the channel alignment of an initially straight prismatic channel is introduced. The velocity of the secondary flow is calculated for uniform quasi-steady flow conditions by application of the equation of the conservation of moment of momentum. The formulation is then closed by introducing the assumption that the differential, between the outer and inner banks, rate of boundary erosion, dissolution or melting (for incised channels) or sediment discharge (for alluvial channels) is proportional to the strength of the secondary flow. This formulation leads to a linear differential equation which is solved for its orthogonal components, which give the rates of meander growth and downstream migration. It is shown that the amplitude of the meanders tends to increase and that the meanders migrate downstream. The dominant wavelength and the corresponding phase shift between channel meandering and the velocity of the spiral motion are calculated as those corresponding to the fastest growth rate. The results are found to be in good agreement with data reported by others.

A primarily experimental investigation was undertaken to determine the internal structure of steady, quasi-uniform, non-separated, axisymmetric flows in circular pipes with sinusoidal wall profiles. The quantities measured include radial and longitudinal distributions of mean velocity, pressure, and total head; the Reynolds shear stress and all three components of turbulence velocity; and boundary shear stress and pressure. Two different wall-wave steepnesses were investigated, and a constant Reynolds number of 1·13 × 105 (based on the average pipe diameter) was maintained in most experiments. The boundary shear stress was found to be shifted upstream relative to the boundary wave, whereas the wall pressure is shifted slightly downstream. The turbulence measurements revealed that there is a central core extending over some 60% of the pipe radius in which the turbulence quantities are constant along the pipe. Near the boundary, however, the turbulence velocities and stress vary periodically along the boundary waves. The longitudinal component of mean velocity was found to be distributed radially according to the power law, but with an exponent that varies along each wave; a simple analytical model is constructed to predict the variation of the exponent. It was not found possible to relate the local boundary shear stress to just the local flow characteristics, since the convective or ‘history’ effects play a significant role in its determination. An empirical formula is derived relating the local boundary shear stress to the local velocity distribution and the first two derivatives of the boundary profile.

A potential-flow based analytical model is developed for the temporal development of the spectra of ripples and dunes generated on an initially flattened bed by an open-channel flow. The analysis predicts the occurrence of two distinct spectral peaks at small times; the physical origin of each is explained. One of the peaks has spatial frequency equal to that given by the Airy relation for a small amplitude stationary free-surface wave. These results are confirmed by Jain's (1971) experimental data. Jain's data also are used to determine quantitativevalues of the lag distance andHayashi's (1970) inclination factor, α, which appear in the sediment-transport relation used in the analysis. A variance-cascade model is used to derive the ‘minus-three-power law’ that describes the spatial spectra of rippIes and dunes at higher wavenumbers. Finally, the relation between the Froude number and dominant wavelength implied by Jain & Kennedy's (1971) non-dimensionalized spectra is discussed and compared with data presented by Jain (1971) and Nordin (1971).

An analytic model of free-surface flow over an erodible bed is developed and used to investigate the stability of the fluid-bed interface and the characteristics of the bed features. The model is based on the potential flow over a two-dimensional, moving, wavy bed with a sinusoidal profile of varying amplitude, and a sediment transport relation in which the transport rate is proportional to a power of the fluid velocity at the level of the bed. By assuming that the dominant wavelength is that for which the rate of amplitude growth is the greatest, expressions are obtained for the wavelength and velocity of the bed features. In addition, conditions for the occurrence of the different configurations, dunes, flat bed, and antidunes, are found from the model. The predicted wavelengths of antidunes and ranges of wavelengths of dunes, and the predicted conditions for change of bed configuration are found to be in good agreement with experimental data. Finally, brief consideration is given to the factors involved in determining the maximum heights of the bed features and surface waves.
